Azaadi:Freedom

  • Dudhope Multicultural Centre 3-5 Saint Mary Place Dundee, Scotland, DD1 5RB United Kingdom (map)

For over 25 years Samia Malik has been exploring her experiences as a woman from a Pakistani, Muslim background growing up in the UK through writing, teaching, recording and touring her unique Ghazal songs in Urdu and English and more recently, through visual art.

In Azaadi: Freedom, Samia’s powerful live songs chart a compelling narrative journey towards liberation through art. Accompanied by exceptional and versatile Bharatnatyam dancer Anne Tiburtius, to a soundtrack of world class musicians including ‘sitarist to the stars’ Baluji Shrivastav OBE and projections of translations and Samia’s art, Azaadi: Freedom is a unique unmissable visual and musical experience.

I had goose bumps! You told my story
I was surprised at how connected to the songs I felt in spite of not knowing the language
Touching - impressive - I was absolutely floored!
The Urdu words and the paintings were integral - I was totally engrossed
Poignant I have come away feeling very strong and empowered - made me feel hopeful
I didn’t understand the language but I understood the journey and felt invigorated
A deep and powerful message
